Grandma’s house always smelled of something baking. The red flowered tablecloth was always on the kitchen table just waiting for fresh baked cookies. I remember the apple tree in the back yard- there was only one, but every year there were so many apples, we used to run around the trunk waving our arms to keep the black birds away from our precious treats. Every year at Easter Uncle Carl would come to visit, Carl has cerebral palsy and his absolute favorite thing to do was to help back an apple pie. The blue and white bowl always sat waiting for his visit. He would love to mix the flour and sugar in it.
Aunt Carol’s sage green vase was a gift from many years ago when Grandma was ill. It sat by her reading chair in the living room and always has fresh flowers from the garden in it. There was a tiny blue vase sitting on Grandpa’s side table- I never knew why, but it was always there. I liked to think it was for his flowers from the garden- but not too many, he wasn’t really a flower guy. Grandma was a free spirit and loved to read the classics, you can always find her latest books from the library on the side table. Grandpa has his special chair too, where he smokes his cigars and oversees the daily events- Awaiting his cookies and pie.
